Metal Assemblage

I was drawn to the texture and shape of this upright screen. My weaving friend confirmed that it is a "reed" from a loom, which separates threads. I learned more about its make up as I began to work with it.

The screen, which creates a visual moiré, is made of single thin wires, closely set together. The edges were not metal (not weldable), but were finished with a thread wrapping, which was coated. I wanted to preserve this unique feature.
To attach the twisted coil, I added a thin rod to each side, welding them to the only exposed metal, at the base and top of the screen. Then I could weld the coils to those supporting edges.

I really like the ribbon-like look of this coil. This simple piece is a very unique abstraction.
